National Highways is the organisation responsible for maintaining and operating England’s motorways.

It was facing challenges with outdated mobile devices for their traffic officers ─ the old technology was causing delays, inefficiencies and safety concerns.

The team partnered with us to create a mobile solution that could help their team work faster and stay safer.

The challenge:

Enable faster, safer work for traffic officers

Traffic officers at National Highways manage incidents, monitor traffic and ensure safety on England's motorways.

Their old devices were bulky, slow and often unreliable, which meant officers were spending unnecessary time on the hard shoulder, putting their safety at risk.

Quick tasks could often take up to 20 minutes, adding delays and distractions in a hazardous environment.

National Highways needed reliable, easy-to-use devices that would fit in officers’ pockets, speed up processes and get them off the hard shoulder quickly.

The solution:

New Samsung smartphones

We led a collaborative workshop with National Highways, Android and Samsung to design a solution that truly met the needs of the traffic officers.

After identifying key requirements ─ speed, durability and ease of use ─ the team shortlisted five devices for real-world trials with the officers.

The unanimous choice? The Samsung Galaxy XCover 6 Pro.

This rugged smartphone ticked all the boxes:

  • Compact size to fit in officers’ pockets
  • IP68 rating for water and dust resistance
  • Exceptional camera quality for documenting incidents from a distance
  • Seamless one-touch access to all systems, improving safety by reducing the time spent entering passwords on the roadside
  • A device ready to work straight out of the box

Our forward logistics service ensured that every device came fully updated, charged and ready to use.

Traffic officers also got access to help from O₂ Gurus via a dedicated helpline, though the rollout was so smooth that only a few calls were needed.

Productivity and safety have been boosted

With the Samsung Galaxy XCover 6 Pro in their hands, traffic officers can now perform their tasks faster, more efficiently and more safely at the roadside.

The device’s rugged durability, combined with enhanced functionality, has increased both productivity and safety for the entire team.

National Highways now has a solution that keeps officers safer and the motorways running smoothly.

‘One touch and they’re into everything, which makes it safer for traffic officers because they're not stood at the side of the road entering passwords. Safety's increased, productivity increases, longevity of the device increases. it just it works.’
